Words Anna Rieser

Tell us about your new show.

We’re bringing Excalibow back this year for a week, although it’s a slightly reworked, updated version having toured it all over the country and the world since last August. It’s a ridiculous story about one plucky string quartet’s ludicrous inter dimensional quest to save the soul of their cellist – all while playing, singing, dancing and most importantly… real actual acting.

What is the spirit of the fringe and how do you embody it?

The Spirit of the Fringe is an “Award that acknowledges and celebrates the talent, hard work, pluck and sheer doggedness demanded of performers from all genres on the Fringe to make a show a success.” So we’re really humbled to be chosen. We’ve been going a long time completely self funded which feels like quite an achievement in the arts these days, and it’s meant that we mainly rehearse with a collection of babies and dogs in the room. Winning the award really helped solidify that the work has been worth it! Hopefully audiences leave thinking they’ve never seen anything like it before.

Favourite fringe memory?

We were invited to perform on Nicholas Parsons’ chat show which was a real honour, but had to leg it over from a street show so turned up with a bunch of hungry, screaming kids 5 mins before they let the audience in. When Bertie got her boobs out we thought Nicky P was going to explode. That would probably have lost us Spirit of the Fringe, he’s a national treasure for goodness sake, you can’t be responsible for Parsons exploding.

Where and when:

Bowjangles: Excalibow Gilded Balloon: Teviot, 1-7 Aug,  5.30 pm from £7.50
