Review: Crystal Rasmussen present The Bible 2 at Underbelly

How to live a life without shame? To answer that question properly you need nudity, lewd orgies, and power ballads, obviously. This five-star flabbergaster Crystal Rasmussen and their duel personality Tom Glitter provides it all and more in full force in this great hysterical odyssey. It’s titled The Bible 2 (Plus a cure for Shame, Violence, Betrayal and Athlete’s Foot) Live!

Crystal and Tom’s life stories intertwine elegantly. Crystal’s recounts growing up as a Romanov, fleeing revolutionary violence, then spending decades being raised by wolves. Sometime later she met a queer teenager full of life but unable to find self-acceptance and alienated from their drab Northern English surroundings. The jollity of the show is counterbalanced against harrowing stories of homophobic attacks from both Tom and Crystal.

Moved by these stories Crystal decided to act. After her seventh husband, Mr Blobby tragically dies they come to Tom’s rescue. Together they discover how to live without shame.

It’s a glamorous, life-affirming barnstorming performance. Whenever the show risks becoming puerile – say, with jokes about Athlete’s Foot – it is rescued by a phenomenal voice so eerily competent that you struggle to believe it is real. It is also an antidote to the misguided belief that trans identities are something new, or that there’s anything po-faced about embracing genderqueer identities.

Crystal Rasmussen gives a bold, brave performance. It is a true privilege to witness their naked body wiggling and writhing in this dark Cowgate ally. We can all learn from such an example.

Crystal Rasmussen presents The Bible 2 Underbelly, Cowgate – Belly Dancer at 5:50 pm until the 25th
