Review: Zach and Viggo: Thunderflop at Cowgate Underbelly TweetShareSharePin0 Shares I’m not quite sure how to describe Thunderflop. A melange of mime, slapstick, improv and sketch, it’s quite difficult to convey with words the absurdity and silliness of this performance by Gaulier-trained clowns Zack Zucker and Viggo Venn – who themselves are not able to pinpoint exactly what it is they do. Their skill as clowns and performers shines through in this piece in their ability to mock, cajole, encourage and drag upon the stage the more-than-tipsy audience, whether to participate in skits and sketches or as a simple bit of audience patter. Their ability to control said audience is particularly impressive: a joker or a wayward heckler has the potential to throw the pair completely off-kilter but they deal with these curveballs with grace and complete good humour. They are undeniably very, very likeable on stage and I frequently found myself in fits of laughter throughout the show. Favourite skits of theirs are their most simple: Venn continually picks up a glass of water as if it is scalding hot throughout the show – a gag that only gets funnier with repetition and a section where they attempted stand-up one-liners (particularly relevant as we see jokes used in Zach Zucker’s other show where he plays hack comedian Jack Tucker). A thoroughly enjoyable and raucous hour – but not one for the faint-hearted!
