Sam Simmons has been described as ‘surreal’ and I cannot think of a better way to define his show. This off-the-wall comedy left me confused about what exactly was going on.
Armed with a shopping trolley full of props, Simmons bounds about the stage, flitting from one character to another. This dizzying array of characters was appropriate for the one man show. However, I struggled to find the laughs in the shouting and swearing at the audience.
Audience interaction featured heavily in this show, including one reoccurring viewer from the front whose debut involved Simmons simulating masturbation with a can of lemonade that he then used to cover the poor subject. This encapsulates the tone of the show.
I may be being overly critical, as this is not my type of humour and Simmons had clearly put a lot of work into the set-up of the show. The props were well planned and included a soundtrack of other characters to match what was going on onstage. The act also featured songs that were sung well and fit into the parade of props on the stage. He clearly had a lot of fans in the crowd who were happily geeing him on; however, I did not leave as an addition to the group.
This show is not for everyone and would be enjoyed by those who like their comedy close to the knuckle and slightly whacky.
