The transformers are three good lads with a very funny sketch show. It usually takes me quite a lot to actually laugh out loud in sketch shows, but last night I was the one with the embarrassingly loud laughter. That is an exceptional testament to what these guys are doing because I have the ‘Festival Flu’ already, which makes laughing painful, so I’ve been trying to resist...very inconvenient.
Anyway, I think what made it so hilarious was the particularity of the characters – there was something very recognizable and familiar in every one. The subtleties of gesture, timing and expression were spot on. I just want to know where they got their insight into how thirteen-year-old girls actually do speak like that with each other!
I don’t want to give too much away by describing the scenarios but I’ll say it’s all in good humour, silly, fun, ridiculous, surprising and inventive. Not too rude, unoffensive, you could probably take along pretty much anyone and they’d enjoy it. Some of the punch lines are by implication rather than glaringly blatant so not really for children…
I think it’s my favourite comedy so far. Reminiscent of the buzz from The Penny Dreadfuls a few years ago while it was still like, “Oh my god, have you heard of The Penny Dreadfuls? They’re hilarious, you’ve GOT to go see them.” You’ve GOT to go see Transformer.
