Following the success of her 2010 Fringe debut, Andi Osho is back with her second stand-up show All the Single Ladies. As the eponymous title suggests, this confessional show is all about her solitary status and why, after three years, it still remains.
The premise of the show is an appealing one: this is to be a brutally honest dissection of the perils and pitfalls of dating. However, despite her being the most charismatic and vibrant of women (it is hard to believe that she is not batting the men off, frankly) the material she uses is so predictable you can’t believe you are listening to Andi Osho utter it.
Even when she adds her own slant, the fact remains that you are hearing yet another person squeezing (excuse the pun) a tired joke out of women farting in front of their boyfriends, or women’s irrational fear at pooing at their boyfriend’s place. There is even mention of that Coyote ‘rather bite your arm off than wake them up’ situation. Yawn. The sappy poem at the end just adds further insult to injury.
Osho’s talents are far superior to what this show would have you believe, which makes this a frustrating hour to witness. Only flashes of the brilliance you’d expect of this award-winning comedienne shine through; her interpretation of the ‘badminton enthusiast’ on internet dating profiles is hilarious, while her observational banter with the audience gives her the opportunity to think on her feet and come up with deliciously fresh material. She is at her best when she is being original and wickedly tongue-in-cheek. While Osho will nevertheless entertain you, this is not her finest hour.
