C!rcaA polished hour of eclectic dance pieces, C!rca blurs the lines between physical theatre, contemporary dance and acrobatics. The performance is divided into a series of sketches: some are dramatic and emotionally charged, some silly and comedic. All the pieces are stylistically expressed with subtle lighting, projecting eerie shadows of the choreographed movement.

The seven part Australian based troupe describes what it does as enacting a ‘unique vision of circus’. However this is misleading. The pieces are more touching (and at times more disturbing) than the word ‘circus’ implies. The show has a broad appeal. It is above all else aesthetically pleasing.

For seventy minutes and fourteen pounds, you will witness seven sculpted and talented dancers push their bodies to within breaking point and somehow make it seem effortless. They tumble over, around and under one another like liquid set against a background of carefully selected musical soundscapes. This aural accompaniment helps to mould and shape an emotive landscape, echoing the movement and shapes created by the seven increasingly inhuman bodies.

This exciting and compelling company presents a piece which is sure to enthral audiences of all ages and interests.  For fringe veterans or first time festival audiences, young and old, Circa will seem a technically impressive feat, if a little lacking in soul.
