altReturning for their third year to the Edinburgh Fringe, the List Operators, originally for adults, have recently turned their attentions to the family market. Combining visual puns and no-holds-barred toilet humour around the theme of ‘ComPOOters,’ the Ozzie duo provide a high-energy, fast-paced show that has the kiddies laughing out loud and the adults trying hard not to.

“Strap yourselves in, folks. It’s that kind of a show,” confirms an Operator after a particularly rude quip within the first few minutes. We can’t say they didn’t warn us.

Farts, snot-picking, snot-flicking, snot-wiping, skid-mark-revealing and virus-vomiting are all par for the course in this don’t-tell-your-mother pun-a-thon.

The pair works well to engage with both young and old alike, interacting with the audience as much as possible. A giant game of Pong involves beach balls being thrown between stage and audience; the adults have to shout out a list of rude words, much to the amusement of the children; ‘aliens’ in the form of bundled up teacloths hiding under the seats are thrown at the actors; a painted arrow moving around a giant computer screen is operated by the audience ‘double clicking’ their fingers.

Certain references to popular culture keep the adults entertained—a game of ‘World of Wool’ is “Like ‘World of Warcraft’ but with more ram.”  Similarly, kittens playing on keyboards and ‘Mentos in Lemonade’ keep the YouTube generation in on the jokes.

If it’s a laugh-a-minute rollercoaster for the over-fives you’re looking for, this is the show for you. However, you should expect a few days of dirty, stinky, pongy, poo-ey, bottom-plop language following this, um, education. Just cross your fingers they don’t roll on the floor laughing while peeing over your dinner guests. And if they do...don’t say we didn’t warn you.
