altCentre stage within the vintage walls of the Bosco Theatre stands a songstress ready and more than willing to bring you back to the bygone days of glamour, with her nightingale vocals and penchant for everything delightfully yesteryear. Indeed, Miss Lili La Scala not only promises to entertain this festival season, but promises to slap a smile on our forlorn faces, too.

With a nod to the talents of Gracie Fields, Flanders and Swan, George Formby and Ivor Novello, Miss La Scala takes us across the pond and back, cherry-picking tunes that one cannot help but like. ‘No-one Ever Wants to Court a Warthog’ and ‘Fanlight Fanny’, particularly, are performed with such gusto and élan that the whole audience melts like butter in the palm of her preciously manicured hand.

The lyrics of these songs carry the show above and beyond the capable vocals and jolly piano accompaniment. Had the dialogue between songs been as strong as those penned in the verses, this show would have been equally slick and compelling. Unfortunately, we were instead left with self-conscious exchanges between La Scala and Stuart, her pianist, as well as far too many affected shoulder raises and over enthusiastic smiles to be acceptable. A shame, but not enough to spoil the show.

For those who love brilliantly eccentric scores preformed by true devotees of this genre, however, then this is the ticket for you.
