altWhen seeing a band for the first time, I always try to work out if it will appeal to me by looking around at the rest of the crowd. In this case, it was virtually impossible as their fan base is entirely mixed – an across-the-board range in age and demographic. It is exciting to see a band that can literally appeal to everyone.

To start with the supporting band, Debutante: Phillip Quirie obviously has talent, both as a singer-songwriter and as a guitarist. Unfortunately, we could barely hear him over the disrespectful crowd - I appreciate they were not there to see him, but he deserved their attention. It seems we’ll hear more of him, though, as he has his fingers in quite a few Edinburgh music-pies.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis have their own interesting history with the formation of the group of siblings being more of a happy accident – one for which I am grateful. Their music is an eclectic mixture of all kinds of music that covers a broad range of influences – which perhaps explains the crowd.

To see a band literally – and more importantly, successfully - cover everything from R&B to swing and all that’s in-between, whilst using every instrument imaginable is rare, and to see so much multi-instrument talent in a group so young – both in terms of longevity as well as actual band member age is staggering. I’d like to see them again, but I’ll get to know their music better in the meantime.

Final note, and a definite endorsement, was the celebrity spot at the gig – Stewart Lee. You wouldn’t argue with him.
