altHawke and Hunter’s Green Room is transformed in The Curse of Macbeth.   This well-known tale, which has been adapted by the Cambridge University ADC, is engaging, chilling and eerie.

Through the literal use of smoke and mirrors, the cast and crew build the atmosphere, each of the actors committing to their characters and immersing the audience completely into the show. The set and score also fit the performance well, surrounding the audience and drawing them in further.

The Green Room is the perfect venue for this show; a small stage and the mirrors (mentioned above) allow its already-dark décor to adapt for each scene. The scene changes are seamless, pulling the audience with them to the next section. The small troupe flits between the smaller roles well, with only Macbeth and Lady Macbeth filling one leading role. The slight alterations to costume allowed the audience to follow the changes without drawing attention from the story.

Not for the faint of heart, this adaptation is unnerving and frightening, and I, for one, was glad to be leaving in the daylight. This is a must see for anyone who has the courage to brave the dark venue and tale.
