Staged in suitably opulent surroundings at The Assembly Rooms, Cocktails with the Diva is a cabaret show performed by a trio of musicians, an opera singer… and a surly waitress.
While some of the jokes fell a little flat (the Holidays Abroad number may not be a favourite for a few members of the audience), on the whole this was a funny, succinct and entertaining show. The vocal performance from The Diva (Melinda Hughes) was astounding, and the introductory song (The Edinburgh Drag) perfectly encapsulates the Fringe experience.
The lyrics are clever and delivered with style by The Diva, and the interaction between Diva and pianist is well-rehearsed, even if the stage that seemed a little small at times.
Booze and banter form the basis of this polished 50 minute performance. So, if you fancy showing off your own singing skills this is the show for you – three lucky audience members who can ‘shake it’ will be rewarded with a cocktail of their own.
