Fringe regulars Mischief Theatre are once again performing an improvised movie live on stage in their critically acclaimed show Lights! Camera! Improvise! The audience is asked to shout out genres, locations and titles and then it is down to the actors to bring the ‘movie’ to life.
The host of the show (who is showing us the movie) drives the action and tests the improvisers by ‘pausing’ and ‘rewinding’ sections to show in slow motion, intermittently switching to cut scenes and providing a running commentary – you can almost feel the improvisers cringing as he makes promises like “this next is a really beautiful scene that completely sums up what these characters are about”.
I was slightly disappointed that the new line-up included so few of the cast from The Play That Goes Wrong. However, I needn’t have worried, as each member of the company showed exceptional talent in adopting a character and crafting storyline from thin air. And the improvisers are quick enough to easily create humour out of their mistakes.
Altogether a brilliant and well-crafted improv show that shouldn’t be missed. And if you miss them here, Mischief Theatre will be in London for a well deserved West End run of The Play That Goes Wrong from September onwards.
