Every time the Axis of Awesome embark on a musical deconstruction of a genre (be it boyband, folk, heavy metal) it’s a bit like discovering Santa isn’t real all over again. That’s their game; lifting the veil and showing that the emperor has no clothes, and they execute it brilliantly.
The Australian trio have made their name mostly from the viral Youtube success of their flagship hit: a song in which they reel through dozens of classics and reveal them to all use the same 4 chords. The irony, though, is that they are now as reliant on their “4 Chord Song” as the bands they’re satirising are on 4 chord songs.
They’ve fostered a playful dynamic, so just sit back and watch the silliness unfold.
