Pelican, the new show from up and coming comedian Elf Lyons, is an energetic yet incisive show about her relationship with her eccentric artist mother. Lyons manages to combine vividly acted tales of growing up with her overly attached mother, the best of which involve The Shining and the titular pelican, with accounts of her attempts to lead an independent life.

This second aspect of the show, involving her relationship with a man in Paris, is more serious, but still features a witty running joke. While these two strands do not always gel, Lyons is charismatic and engaging enough to overcome this occasional disconnect.

Pelican is a uniquely funny, surreal and sometimes moving show that displays Lyons’ comedic talent and establishes her as someone to watch out for in the future.
