Based on the book by best-selling children’s author David Walliams, Les Petites Theatre Company’s stage adaptation of The First Hippo on the Moon brings the story of Sheila and her star-studded dream to the Fringe.
Sheila has always dreamt of being the first hippo on the moon, and, in a bid to beat her childhood bully to it, Sheila and her friends build a rocket. Performed expertly, The First Hippo on the Moon features advanced puppetry and music, all intended to teach children to dream bigger and work together.
This is a fantastic show for young children. The play features small parts of audience participation, so children are actively engaged from the beginning. The quirky characters, music and high energy fun is a wonderful way to get children interested in theatre from a young age.
The puppetry in particular is incredible to watch. From the movement of the ostrich, to the facial expressions of the silver-back gorilla, there is always something bright, colourful and beautiful to look at. Whether adult or child, it’s easy to sit back and appreciate the effort and talent that has gone into the production. There are also enough jokes about poo to keep everyone entertained!
If you’re an adult looking for a fun and easy to watch show for young children, The First Hippo on the Moon is a wonderful choice.
