It is difficult to define exactly what sort of act Mat Ewins’ performance is, but what is certain is that it is both beautifully crafted and hilariously delivered. Adventureman sees one of Ewins’ characters, an up-and-coming relic hunter, in a desperate hunt to find a lost amulet in order to keep his job in a story not so loosely based on the Indiana Jones franchise. However, Ewins often moves away from the main narrative to explore other fantastically silly stories and worlds.
What makes this show unique is that it is accompanied by Ewins’ animated short films, videos, audioclips and doodles, shedding light into some of his other talents. This multimedia extravaganza is seamlessly incorporated throughout the act, making it seem organic and effortless. Ewins has truly embraced modern technology and could very well be creating a new comedy genre. From absurdity to slick improvisation, beautifully scripted sketches to playful and good natured audience interaction, this act is relentlessly funny – to the point where the laughter begins to hurt your ribs.
Ewins’ act was among the must see acts of last year’s Fringe and I suspect 2017 will be no different. It should come as no surprise that he continues to sell out.
