Mike Wozniak is a performer of great poise, control and ability. His Fringe show this year, which is managing to pack out a large Free Fringe venue, is based, almost solely, around the accidental acquisition of a cat. A whole show spun out of something that should be simply mundane.
It is designed to be a form of gentle faux midlife crisis. The central story, which is constantly reprieved, is interspersed with delightfully ridiculous facts, alongside some madcap observations, dropped in to break up the narrative.
On Man Dad Cat Band is a lot more straight a show than you might think and it never quite gets into top gear. However, Wozniak is always in control of the pace, his petulant annoyance at the everyday world of accidental cat ownership is a strong mechanism for anger, pathos and ethical reflection.
A strong performance by a fringe stalwart.
