Anthony Hopkins’s directorial debut is on it’s homeward journey as it stops at the Edinburgh Fringe as part of it’s world tour. Bob Kingdom – giving a mesmerising performance of Dylan Thomas – recreates a date on an American lecture tour.
Over the course of the hour the audience is regaled with poems, short stories and observations on trains, pubs and much else. Kingdom brings Dylan Thomas to life as he shuffles around the stage. The real triumph is his voice, which shines new light on Dylan’s poetry, adding so much to the verse with Thomas’s characteristic cadence and rhythm.
The progression of poems from those about his early life, through to his post-war ‘return journey’ home gives the show a satisfying emotional arc. This is a must-see show for anyone who has read Dylan Thomas and a perfect starting point for a day at the Fringe.
